Chapter 1
Reaping Day
I
held my breath, watching as Effie Trinket reached her hand into the glass bowl.
I stared as she ruffled her hand around. She grabbed a paper and pulled it out.
“Lilith Prodossess!” she called
cheerfully. I heard a family groan in the background. Lily was their daughter.
“Hello, Lilith,” Effie said as a
girl with blue eyes and blonde hair walked up to the platform. I recognized her
from when I was walking to the Reaping. She had explained the entire thing to
me.
My name is Tyler Dreamvine. I’m from
a place called Raplishite. But I woke up this morning, the morning of the
Reaping, in the Seam. It was unusual because everyone looked so much alike. But
I stood out, my dirty blond hair and bright green eyes marking me as different.
I walked to the Reaping, not knowing a thing about what was happening. I stood
in line with the other 17-year-old boys and prayed to Yesemiah that I wouldn’t
get chosen.
Effie reached her hand into a
different bowl, this one with the boys’ names on them.
“Tyler Dreamvine!” she called. I
stood up straight and walked toward the strange woman. I wanted to hear a cry
in the distance, to know that I had a family here, but I knew there wasn’t going
to be one. I didn’t belong here. I belonged in the past.
“Nice to meet you, Tyler. I don’t
think you’ve ever been to the Reaping before. I would have remembered such
beautiful green eyes,” Effie said. I nodded then stood next to Lily.
“Thank you for coming to the
Reaping. Don’t forget to watch the Hunger Games!” Then Effie turned and walked
into the Justice Building.
“Congratulations, District 12
Tributes,” she said when we got into the building.
“Hello, Effie,” I said.
“Hello Tyler. Now tell me about
yourself. I have never heard of such a peculiar name, or such bright, piercing
eyes.” I was about to launch into my full history, but the scars on my back
started to burn. I knew revealing my history here would be a mistake, so I
remained quiet.
“Well, Tyler? I’m waiting.” I
sighed.
“I don’t remember,” I shrugged. And
why not? My past was fading anyway. I could barely remember what my girlfriend
looked like, and I couldn’t even remember what my best friend looked like. I
couldn’t remember if I had parents, or family. My past was rapidly fading, only
to be replaced with a false past that took place here, in District 12.
“Amnesia, huh? This will be a very
exciting year!” she said happily. Then she led us to the rooms where family
could visit us. I wasn’t expecting anyone, but when a knock sounded on the
door, I opened it. A young girl was standing there.
“Hello, Tyler. My name is Katniss
Everdeen. I wanted to say, welcome to District 12. I’ve never seem you before,
so I brought cookies.” Katniss, who looked about seven or eight, handed me a
basket.
“Thank you, Katniss. Would you like
to stay here for a minute?” Katniss nodded and sat on the couch.
“Where do you come from?” Katniss
asked. “You aren’t from around here.”
“I don’t know,” I said. My past was
fading even more rapidly. “I just woke up here this morning.” Katniss nodded
her head.
“I know. I saw you sleeping in the
street. I wish you knew where you were from. I would get to learn about places
outside of Panem.” I nodded. I understood what she meant.
“I think I can show you something
special, Katniss. Something to make up for not remembering where I’m from.” I
closed my eyes and felt the life in the room. There was mold in the walls, and
seeds under the floors. I focused on the seeds and they sprouted, growing long
vines that wrapped around the room. I then focused on the fruit of the plant
and made it grow, spelling the name Katniss
in bright red berries. Katniss stared, shocked. I laughed.
“How did you do that?” she asked.
“Why else would my name be
Dreamvine?” I replied. Katniss nodded.
“You must come from a special
place.”
“Yeah,” I sighed. “I guess I do.”
Ooooh I love it :D This sounds like it's gonna be totally awesome. Good job!
